Roeper Teaches Lifesaving Swimming Skills to Underserved Children

Bloomfield Hills, Michigan- On August 15, The Roeper School will be holding its weeklong swimming program for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn to swim. African American and Hispanic/Latino children are two to three times more likely to drown than Caucasian children. Nearly 600 children have been served by Roeper since 2010 when it became a local partner of the USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash program. Roeper is one of only four Make A Splash programs in Michigan. This year Roeper was once again one of 50 applicants out of over 150 to receive a 2016 USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash $5,000 grant.

Dozens of swimming instructors will be on hand at its swimming facility on campus at 41190 Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills as over one hundred at risk children learn swimming and water safety. The one hour lessons will commence on the hour beginning at 9am and will run until 3pm. The cost is only $10.00 per child thanks to the USA Swimming Foundation grant, The Roeper School, and the generosity of Roeper Community members.

Carolyn Lett, Roeper Diversity Coordinator, stated, “The Roeper School has always embraced and promoted diversity and our participation in the Make A Splash program helps in a large way to fulfill our mission.”

Broadcast and print media are welcome to attend as there will be some great photo opportunities the week of the event. Advanced interviews are also available to discuss the importance of teaching our children to swim.

The Roeper School is an independent coeducational day school for gifted children in metro Detroit founded by George and Annemarie Roeper in 1941. The Roepers believed that all human beings have two central tasks: to come to understand themselves and to discover how they will contribute to the world. A pre-K through 12th grade school, Roeper plays a formative role in the pursuit of these lifelong goals and offers a whole-child education for gifted students that guides them on the journey to becoming discerning, humane, engaged adults.  With a dedication to diversity, democracy, and community service that dates to its founding, Roeper students and alumni endeavor to fulfill the school’s mission:  Educating and inspiring gifted students to think as individuals and to engage as a community with compassion for each other and this world.
