Bloomfield Hills, Michigan-

The Roeper School is proud to announce that Isabel Ivanescu and Andy Reed are National Merit Scholarship winners. Both students are leaders who strongly exemplify the school philosophy, especially two of its core tenets– “to make equal human rights for all people a priority” and “to commit to justice rather than power”. Each in their own way has shown much more than excellence in academics.

Isabel has been an active participant in Roeper’s Model United Nations program where she received the Best Delegate Award in 11th grade at the Great Lakes MUN and this year at the same event won an Honorable Mention. This year, at the North American Invitational Model United Nations in Washington D.C. she received a Verbal Commendation. Last year she received second place in the State Forensics Tournament. Isabel, has most recently taken on a Senior Project to provide a home for homeless people in Detroit through houseDetroit where she explains “… I have a consistent record of pulling off, nay, dominating, the undertakings I start. It’s not my story that matters, though, it’s those of the people houseDetroit will be helping. People who have been knocked down by a troubled economy, a difficult past, an unfair system, or a personal tragedy.” Her work was recently featured in a Huffington Post article.

Andy is co-president of his senior class and co-captain of the Varsity Soccer Team. He was on Roeper’s 2014 State Championship Soccer Team and this year he achieved first team all-district and first team all-MIAC. Andy is also an active member of Roeper Student Government. Last year, Andy undertook a meaningful project which made a great contribution to the school. He initiated, organized and hosted screenings of the film REJECT, a documentary about social rejection and ostracism. He worked with teachers to write questions for the follow-up discussions after the screening for students. The screening for all community members was followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director and a panel of local experts in relevant fields.

National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are chosen from the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.

The Roeper School is an independent coeducational day school for gifted children in metropolitan Detroit founded by George and Annemarie Roeper in 1941. The Roepers believed that all human beings have two central tasks: to come to understand themselves and to discover how they will contribute to the world. As a pre-K through 12th grade school, Roeper plays a formative role in the pursuit of these lifelong goals and offers a whole-child education for gifted students that guides them on the journey to becoming discerning, humane, engaged adults.  With a dedication to diversity, democracy, and community service that dates to its founding, Roeper students and alumni endeavor to fulfill the school’s mission:  Educating and inspiring gifted students to think as individuals and to engage as a community with compassion for each other and this world.
